About Rupert

Approachable AI brings together two things I care deeply about: understanding technology and working with people.

Rather than assuming what someone needs to know about AI, I begin by finding out what they already know, what matters in their work and what they are trying to achieve. A large part of my role is then translation: making something technically complex clear enough to explore together and connect to a real context.

Questions, scepticism and disagreement are welcome because I don't think you can understand the opportunities in AI without being equally willing to examine its limitations, risks and trade-offs.

A wider professional perspective

My professional background spans more than two decades across technology, research and innovation, strategy, organisational change, communications and partnerships. I've moved between engineering, business, universities, culture and public life, often working where different disciplines, organisations and sectors need to connect.

That breadth matters because a conversation that starts with AI can quickly become one about organisational strategy, leadership, communication, change, creativity or what will actually work in practice.

Working with AI

I’ve been fascinated by the concept of ‘thinking machines’ since I was a teenager.

AI has been catapulted into public consciousness in recent years, but the questions behind it have a much longer history, reaching back to Descartes and earlier thinking about the nature of mind. I’m interested in what our response to these systems reveals about how we understand ourselves, and what the technology’s future could mean for society.

Working closely with AI keeps changing my sense of what I can attempt. I use these systems to develop my thinking and take on work that would previously have been beyond my reach, learning as I go while bringing my own judgement and sense of purpose to the process.

The best way to explore a potential project is simply to talk it through. We can discuss what you have in mind, where AI could make a useful difference and how I might help.
